The South African team is scheduled to play a couple of Tests versus Sri Lanka which starts from July 12 in Galle, the venue of the first contest. The second match will begin from July 20 in Colombo. Back in May, AB de Villiers hung his boots from international cricket, which sent shockwaves in their cricketing nation. Moreover, a massive void has been left at the number four position of the team.

The conditions in Sri Lanka won’t be the same as that of the African nation and the Proteas are in desperate need to find out someone who can fill in the massive shoes of de Villiers. Meanwhile, speaking to the media ahead of their departure of the Island, Faf du Plessis, the skipper of South Africa, mentioned that Temba Bavuma has been considered to be slotted at number one.

“We will definitely be looking into that” du Plessis

“Number four will probably be a good position for him. There will be some good discussions in the team. Obviously, when you go to the subcontinent, the hardest places to bat will be in the middle because you come in facing the spinning and the reverse swinging ball.

So what I think we will discuss is that we will try and get our best players of spin in the middle periods to try and counter that. So if that gives an opportunity to change our batting lineup a little bit, we will definitely be looking into that,” du Plessis affirmed.

Bavuma made his debut way back in 2014 but hasn’t played a whole lot of matches with 29 Tests. He last played in the Proteas’ Test series versus Australia in March. He has scored 1395 runs at an average of 34.87 to go with 10 half-centuries. His maiden ton came against England in Cape Town back in 2016. Du Plessis and Co would be hoping for Bavuma to fire.
