4. Brings in big match experience at the top which India lacked in recent times

In most of the knockout games India played since the 2014 World T20 final, the Indians have lacked the confidence to beat the bigger oppositions. The only teams against whom they won a knockout game in the ICC tournaments are Bangladesh in 2015 and 2017, South Africa in 2014. These are not the stats a team like India would want to carry.

Another coincidence in all the games they lost in this phase is that the top order has failed horribly. The Indian top-order needs a solid presence at least at one end, which MS Dhoni could perhaps provide. Is he the man they’re looking up to for a moment as big as a knockout game? Could be or could not be, but he’s not far away from doing a good job.

Will the Indians consider this as an option? Well, it’s one of the best they have right now and although it could seem unorthodox, it could be the best thing to do with all the experiments failing horrendously.
