Gambhir, Tiwary get involved in an ugly spat during a Ranji Trophy match: The responsibility for the team’s conduct firmly rests with the captain who is responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws. It seems that two of India’s international cricketers forgot this and brought the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Bengal into disrepute at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Captains Gautam Gambhir and Manoj Tiwary were involved in an ugly altercation and almost exchanged blows during the ongoing match. The incident occurred in the 8th over of Bengal’s second innings, when PS Chatterjee was dismissed by Manan Sharma and Tiwary, wearing a cap, came into bat at number 4. As the bowler began his run-up, the Bengal skipper stopped him and requested a helmet from the dressing room. Delhi players led by Gambhir thought it was an attempt to waste time.

Manan ticked off Manoj and he told him to lay-off. All of a sudden, Gambhir, at first slip, got into action and started abusing the Bengal skipper, who then retaliated.

As per reports, suddenly all hell broke loose as Gambhir said: “Shaam ko mil tujhe maroonga (Meet me in the evening, I will hit you). And Tiwary retorted, saying: “Shaam kya abhi bahar chal (Why wait till evening, let’s go out and settle it now”).

Umpire Srinath then sprinted from bowler’s end. Gambhir with his fists raised charged towards Tiwary, who was also not ready to back down. The umpire came in the middle, but Gambhir to everyone’s horror pushed the umpire trying to get him out of the way. Touching umpire is a grave offence in cricket, which could invite a ban.

Manoj was then seen shouting at Gambhir, saying: “Did I tell you anything? Why did you have to come in between?” Both Tiwary and Gambhir have been summoned by the match referee Valmick Buch.
