Discarded India opener Gautam Gambhir posted a video on twitter stating, “Throw me to the wolves and I will return as the leader of the pack.” It was not clear, whether Gambhir was hinting a comeback in the Indian side as captain but it did reflect the left-hander’s positivity. Gambhir went on to add further by tweeting another video which ponders about his misfortune, possibly pointing towards his axing.
Gautam Gambhir, who was on a comeback trail as a replacement of Rahul has failed to make most of the opportunity scoring 29, 50, 29 and a duck. This subsequently led to his ouster after fit-again K L Rahul was available. The veteran of 58 Tests has now returned to the Ranji setup and is playing for Delhi.
Ironically, Rahul’s scores in both innings of the Vizag Test were 0 and 10. The Karnataka batsman was ruled out for due to a hamstring injury after the first Test against New Zealand Kanpur before England arrived to play. The injury kept him away from the remainder of the three-match New Zealand series and the first Test of the five-match series against England as well.
The selectors then chose to go win the in-form and the experienced Gambhir who squandered his chance to keep the selector’s faith. As of now, it seems that his Test career is as good as over. His prospects of coming back into the team looks very bleak in the presence of a much promising young batsman – KL Rahul. However, that has not stopped the southpaw from believing.
