Former Australian captain Ian Chappell said that he was impressed by the way MS Dhoni led India in the World T20 2016 and he feels that he can see Dhoni extending his career as captain.

India was knocked out of the tournament by West Indies in the second semi-finals of the World T20 in Mumbai. The home team scored 192/2 batting first after Sammy won the toss and put India into batting. Virat Kohli again was the star with the bat making 89* and Indian openers making 40 runs each and 50 runs for the opening partnership.

West Indians replied in kind as Lendl Simmons and Johnson Charles took the fight to the Indians and under pressure they made mistakes, despite getting Gayle early. Simmons and Charles made 97 runs together and then Andre Russell took Ravindra Jadeja apart in the 19th over and sealed the match with a six off Virat Kohli.

“Well! I think he was in form in T20. It means as a player and as a captain. He captained pretty well in the T20. We don’t have him as a Test captain but we want him and I think he was too good in World T20,” Chappell said.

He felt that the total of 192 was more than enough on the Mumbai track, despite totals of 189 and 229 being chased in previous matches. Chappell was particularly critical of the way Ravindra Jadeja bowled on a flat pitch. The left-arm spinner went for 48 runs in his 4 overs including 12 in the crucial 19th over. Chappell said, “He seems to control the delivery when there is help. When there is no help, he loses control.”

He also had kind words for the Windies team as well, “You think about the things West Indies do. They are not great runners between the wickets. They were not very good in the field today. Without these you cannot make up except hitting those sixes and fours.”
