When the name Imran Khan comes to the fore, the first and foremost memory of Pakistan’s 1992 Cricket World Cup victory sparks. The Lahore-born fast bowler scored 72 runs and then picked up England’s last wicket of Richard Illingworth, which gave the Men in Green their maiden championship. However, the cricketer retired in the same year and moved into politics ever since.

In April 1996, he founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and has thereafter contested for a seat in the National Assembly in October 2002. He was elected to the parliament in the 2013 elections where his party garnered the second-most number of votes in the country. The General Elections are scheduled to take place on July 25 and a total of 342 seats are up for grabs.

I am hopeful, I am confident

Imran Khan is also contesting the elections and is confident about his chances of being anointed as the Honorable Prime Minister of the nation. Pakistan People’s Party, headed by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League, led by Shezbaz Sharif are also a part of the elections. Khan already has charted out plans his country needs to implement in order to eradicate poverty and corruption.

“What Pakistan has to do is follow China’s example where they lift people out of poverty,” Khan was quoted as saying in an interview in a private jet after his campaigning in Punjab province.

“(The) public is demanding accountability of corrupt leaders of political parties. Now, each time there is an attempt to hold them accountable, they all get together and start saying it’s anti-democratic, and in this case they are saying it is pre-poll rigging,” the 65-year-old mentioned.

Khan’s party has beaten others in one opinion poll and Imran Khan spoke about their chances in the elections. “I’m quietly confident that this time we’ll do it. I am hopeful, I am confident, but still, the match is not over until the last ball is bowled.” the former cricketer added.
