India v Australia 2nd Test, Day 4 – Statistical Highlights

Despite owning the upper hand in the Test match till Tea on the 3rd day, Australia ended on losing side as they lost to India by 75 runs chasing 188 in the 4th innings on day 4. Wicket-less post-tea session on day 3 led the fightback for India and a spirited bowling performance with Ravichandran Ashwin taking 6-wicket haul helped India to register a famous win at Bangalore.

Here we look at all the stats and numbers recorded during the 4th day’s play:

1 – For the first time in Test cricket, 4 different bowlers (Nathan Lyon, Ravindra Jadeja, Josh Hazlewood, Ravichandran Ashwin) picked up 6-wicket haul in the same Test match. There have been two other instances of 6-wicket hauls in all the 4 innings.

1.57 – Ravindra Jadeja’s economy rate in 4th innings in Test cricket is the 2nd best for anyone. Trevor Goddard’s 1.41 is the best rate. (Min: 1000 balls)

4 – Number of Indians won a man of the match award at their home ground in Test cricket including KL Rahul in this game. Kris Srikkanth at Chennai, Sachin Tendulkar at Mumbai, Wriddhiman Saha at Kolkata are other three.

6/67 – Josh Hazlewood’s bowling figures of 6/67 are the 4th best bowling figures by any pacer on Indian soil since 2000.

8/50 – Nathan Lyon’s bowling figures of 8/50 in first innings are the 5th best figures for any player and best for an Australia in Test cricket in losing cause.

25 – Number of 5-wicket hauls Ravichandran Ashwin has taken in Test cricket so far, the most in anyone’s first 47 Tests. Previous fastest to 25 five-fers in Tests was Richard Hadlee in 62 matches.

30 – Matches took by Ravichandran Ashwin for 200 wickets in Test wickets at home, the fewest games taken by anyone for 200 Test wickets at home. Previous fastest was Anil Kumble in 35 games.

75 – India’s 75-run win is the 3rd biggest for any team while defending less than 200 in 4th innings of a Test match.

87 – First innings deficit India overcame to win this Test, the 4th biggest for them in Test cricket. Top 2 largest first innings deficits overcame by India are against Australia only.

92 – Runs scored by Cheteshwar Pujara in second innings of this Test. For the first time in Tests, Pujara got out in the 90s. He converted his previous 10 ninety scores to centuries.

188 – Target defended by India in this Test, the joint 4th lowest target they have successfully defended in Test cricket. Top two lowest targets they successfully defended are against Australia.

202 – Number of wickets Ravi Ashwin has taken in Test cricket at home, he is the 4th Indian and 19th player in overall to take 200 Test wickets at home.
