Delhi Daredevils hosted a jubilant Sunrisers Hyderabad side in the 40th match of the IPL at Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi. Karun Nair was once again appointed as captain of Delhi side due to the injury to Zaheer Khan. Nair won the toss and elected to field first. It was ‘the Yuvraj Singh show’ for the Sunrisers as he scintillated one all with his 41-ball 70 at a strike rate of 170. He hit 11 boundaries and a maximum in the process.

At one point of time, Yuvi was going at a strike rate of 100, when he was at 36 off 36 deliveries. Then what followed was total carnage. He propelled the Sunrisers’ score to a competitive 185. Almost all the batsmen contributed with the bat with their essential cameos. Mohammad Shami was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed a couple of wickets out of the three dismissed batsmen.

For the Delhi Daredevils, starting from Samson to Morris, every one of them contributed with the bat. Pant, Iyer and Nair all stitched key partnerships but the finishing touch was provided by Anderson and Morris. Anderson starred with his 24-ball 41, as he scored at a strike rate of 170. Nair found some of his lost touch by scoring his 39 at a strike rate of 195.

In the end, it was a comfortable and much-needed victory for the Daredevils as they broke their losing streak with a 4 wicket win over the in-form Sunrisers. Shami was elected as the man of the match for his performance

Mohammad Shami

An elated Shami was happy to receive the accolade and believed that this performance would boost his performance. Shami was glad that his specific plans against specific batters worked well.

This performance will boost my confidence. I was trying to back myself. It will be good for me and my team. If you get injured that disturbs you mentally. When on field, I do not feel that much pressure. It’s a T20 format so you have to use the new ball and not give pace to the batsmen. We had different plans for both of them (Williamson and Warner), wanted to stick to my skills and leave it to luck.

Karun Nair

Nair was ecstatic for once being on the winning side after a while. However, Nair mentioned that dropping Yuvraj’s catch proved to be expensive for Delhi. Karun was also glad about the fact that he could finally middle a few in his innings. The stand-in skipper wished Daredevils’s campaign accelerated from here on.

Very happy. It was a complete team performance. Really glad to have a win here. I think the bowlers gave it all. If we had got that catch (Yuvraj’s drop), they wouldn’t have gone that far. We have always spoken about how we are a young team and should play like a young team. We just wanted to go there and play positively, play with intent. Bit disappointed but glad that finally got some runs under my belt and hoping to kick off from here.

David Warner

Warner dearly would have wanted to win this as they have been struggling away from home. Warney commended the efforts of Yuvraj Singh. However, the left-hander claimed that the wicket changed its nature over the course of the game.

Obviously it has been a little bogey being away. Not winning too many on the road. Talking to the guys, they thought 186 was enough. The way Yuvi finished off was fantastic. They played unreal. Came out with intent in the first six and with the way they finished, credit to them. Definitely after the first couple of overs when the spikes were going in, the wicket looked slow.

The SRH captain went ahead and credited the efforts of the Daredevils batsmen. Warner further desired to regroup as quickly as possible within the two days before the next match.

The slower balls were holding up and that is where we needed to be predictable. The quicker ball was coming on nicely. There wasn’t too much (dew) and no excuses. They batted fantastically and credit to them. We have a couple of days before two games at home. Looking forward to that.
