IPL 2017: Franchises retain 140 players including 44 overseas recruits

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2017) the eight franchises have retained a total of 140 players; December 15 was the deadline for the teams to decide on the retention. The two new franchises Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions retained their respective skippers MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and other star players like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Kings XI Punjab have the maximum balance in their purse with INR 233,500,000 while Mumbai Indians have the least INR 115,550,000 left with them for the auction.

 

Among the players retained 44 are the overseas players the teams have had with them in the last season. Pune has released the maximum number of player 11 that includes England’s Kevin Pietersen, Indian pacer Ishant Sharma and allrounder Irfan Pathan. Gujarat has let go eight players the biggest them being South African pacer Dale Steyn who is out with an injury.

Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad let go off just six players and held up most of the players from the champion squad. While doing so they spent 45.1 crore and still have a decent sum of 20.9 crore in their hands. Delhi Daredevils spent INR 44.5 crore to retain their players and now have 21.5 crore with them to pick new players in the auction. Kings XI Punjab have 19 players in the squad now with 5 overseas players; they have a purse balance of 23.35 crore having spent 42.65

Kolkata Knight Riders have also retained the nucleus of their side and spent 46.25 crore doing so. They now have 19.75 crore with them to bid for players in the IPL 2017 auction. Royal Challengers Bangalore have also gone ahead with holding on to most of the players they already had in the squad spending 53.175 crore, they will have to refrain from any extravaganza in the auction since the balance left with them is 12.825 crore.

The overall spending by the eight franchises was INR 3,846,700,000.
