Kolkata Knight Knights have jumped among the top four teams in the IPL 2021 after their resounding seven-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians on Thursday, September 23. At the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Men in Gold and Purple defied the odds and came out trumps. As far as MI are concerned, they have reasons to worry after being pushed out of the top four in the points table.

De Kock steps up for MI

MI got off to a brisk start as they scored 56 runs in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock stitched together a 78-run stand for the opening wicket before Sunil Narine got rid of the former. Rohit scored 33 and also became the first batter to score over 1000 runs against a single opponent in the IPL. After the fall of the first wicket, the Mumbai-based team lost some momentum.

Quinton de Kock showed decent form after he scored a 42-ball 55 with four fours and three sixes. The middle-order couldn’t quite step up. Kieron Pollard threatened with a 15-ball 21, but he was run out at the non-striker’s end while trying to sneak in a single. In the end, MI huffed and puffed to 155. Lockie Ferguson and Prasidh Krishna were the pick of the KKR bowlers as they got two wickets each.

Iyer and Tripathi crush Mumbai

The Knights got off to a blistering start after they racked up 63 runs in the powerplay. Venkatesh Iyer went hammer and tongs to put KKR on the driver’s seat. Jasprit Bumrah gave MI their first breakthrough, castling Shubman Gill. After he got out, Iyer went on to muster his maiden IPL half-century off 25 balls. The southpaw made sure that the required run-rate didn’t go up for the Knights.

He went on to score a 30-ball 53 with four fours and three sixes before Bumrah rattled his woodwork. Rahul Tripathi looked at his very best as well. Batting at No.3. Tripathi made an unbeaten 42-ball 74 with eight fours and three sixes. Bumrah got his third wicket in the form of Eoin Morgan, but the writing was already on the wall for MI. The Knights chased the target down in 15.1 overs.
