Three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finally have a win under their belt in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing their second match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), the Super Kings registered a comprehensive victory by six wickets as they managed to outplay the opposition in all three facets of the game.

The match commenced with MS Dhoni winning the toss and electing to field first. Put to bat, KL Rahul & his Men, succumbed to a disastrous outing as the Punjab Kings batting line-up crumbled like a pack of cards. The right-arm pacer Deepak Chahar produced one of the best spells of his entire cricket career as he ran through the opposition’s batting order.

Deepak Chahar’s first wicket came in the first over of the match only as he uprooted the stumps of the opening batsman Mayank Agarwal. This was followed by a terrible mix-up in the middle in the third over and it resulted in skipper Rahul walking back to the pavilion after getting run-out courtesy of Ravindra Jadeja.

After Rahul, the explosive power-hitter Chris Gayle lost his wicket to Deepak Chahar in the fifth over. Chahar weaved his magic again as he soon dismissed Deepak Hooda and Nicholas Pooran to diminish all the hopes of PBKS fans. Shahrukh Khan looked in a decent form with the bat as he played a sublime knock of 47 runs off 36 deliveries.

However, the 25-year-old emerged as a lone warrior as apart from him, no other Punjab batsman could score 15+ runs. Thus, owing to a disciplined bowling effort by the three-time champion, PBKS could only manage a paltry total of 106 runs at a loss of eight wickets.

Moeen Ali and Faf du Plessis keep their calm in an easy run chase

Chasing 107 was never going to be difficult for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Both the opening batsman including the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis took their time to settle in the middle and get used to the playing conditions. Punjab bowlers tried their best to win the lost battle especially Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami as they kept a check on the flow of the runs along with trying to pick wickets.

CSK lost their first wicket in the fifth over in the form of Ruturaj. Though they lost another three wickets, sublime knocks by Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali of not out 36 and 46 respectively ensured that the team completes the target within 16 overs.
