Clinical Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were too good for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) played at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai on April 7 (Thursday). After winning today’s contest, LSG have climbed to second spot at the points table.

Winning the toss, LSG skipper KL Rahul had no hesitation to bowl first. Opener Prithvi Shaw (61 off 34 balls) came all guns blazing and stroked nine fours and two sixes. However, his partner, David Warner (4 off 12 balls) never got going and struggled for runs. With the help of Prithvi’s knock, DC managed to score 50 runs inside the field restrictions.

However, as soon as Prithvi got out, DC lost two more wickets in quick succession in form of Warner and West Indies hard-hitter Rovman Powell (3 off 10). Both batters were scalped by Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi. After the fall of Warner and Powell, skipper Rishabh Pant (39* off 36 balls) and Sarfaraz Khan (36* off 28 balls) stitched a valuable partnership of 75 runs.

However, due to disciplined bowling effort from the LSG bowlers, Pant and Khan could not provide a strong finish to their side, as the Capitals finished on 149/3 in their 20 overs. Bishnoi was the stand-out bowler for LSG, picking up two wickets and only giving 22 runs in his four over quota. Off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham, who was playing his first match for LSG, was also impressive in scalping one big wicket of Shaw and spending only 23 runs in his four overs.

Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul provided the perfect start to LSG

Chasing 150, skipper KL Rahul (24 off 25 balls) and Quinton de Kock (80 off 52 balls) gave the perfect start to LSG. The opening duo stitched an excellent partnership of 73 runs for the opening wicket. After Rahul was scalped by chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, De Kock took the responsibility of scoring the bulk of runs.

Despite LSG losing some wickets in the middle, Deepak Hooda (11 off 12 balls) and Krunal Pandya (19* off 14 balls) took the game till the final over and the finishing touches were provided by young batter Ayush Badoni. South African pacer Anrich Nortje displayed a pathetic bowling effort, as he gave away 35 runs in his 2.2 overs.

The pacer was also removed from the attack after bowling two above-waist no-balls. Kuldeep Yadav continued his good form and took two wickets for the Capitals. Spinner Lalit Yadav and pacer Shardul Thakur also scalped one wicket each. With this win, LSG have climbed to the second position with three wins in a row while DC have slipped to the seventh position.
