Devdutt Padikkal was easily the find of the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The left-hander scored 473 runs in 15 innings last year in the IPL and scored his runs at an average of 31.53.

Even though batting behemoths like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers were in good form last season, Padikkal emerged as the leading run-scorer for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side. He became a household name in India with his exploits with the willow in hand.

For a player to be recognized as the Emerging Player of the Year, there are a few criteria that he must fulfill.

The player should have been born after 1st April 1994.

Also, the player in contention should not have played more than 25 IPL matches at the start of an IPL season.

The player should not have played more than 20 ODIs and 5 Test matches.

And finally, the player in contention should not have won the award previously.

Over the years, there have been 13 players who have won the award. While 12 of them were Indians, the only non-Indian player to win the Emerging Player of the Year award was Mustafizur Rahman. Nine out of these 13 players also went on to play for their country at the international level.

7 out of the 8 teams that are participating in the 2021 edition of the IPL have produced at least one emerging player. The only side from which not even a single player has won the Emerging Player of the Year award is the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
