The veteran cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes that the inception of Indian Premier League (IPL) has worked wonders for the domestic cricketers in long term. He featured for Vidarbha in the recently concluded domestic season even as they won Ranji and Irani trophy. Jaffer played a huge role for his team with the bat and mentored the younger players in the squad. However, he also felt that Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab have formed a formidable line up this time around and it would be tough to predict the winner for the upcoming season.
Though Jaffer didn’t play much of the T20 cricket during his illustrious career, he was of the opinion that the IPL has helped change the temperament of the young players who get a golden opportunity to rub the shoulders with some of the great players in the world. The 40-year-old himself has featured for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the earlier editions of the tournament.
IPL helps players to get ready for international cricket
Wasim Jaffer, while speaking exclusively to CricTracker, heaped praises on IPL and went on to say that the tournament has helped the players to get ready for the highest level of cricket.
“IPL is a great platform for domestic players. It tests your mental attitude and your temperament. If a player has done well in the Ranji season and he gets a chance to perform for a particular franchise, it’s nothing short of a great platform. The cricketers come into the reckoning for the national side if they play well in the tournament. IPL helps you find out who’s made for International cricket. So it’s a great place to showcase the skills for the players,” he said.
One of the legends of the Indian cricket also weighed in his opinion regarding the strongest team in the upcoming season of the Indian T20 extravaganza and believed the teams like Delhi and Punjab look strongest after the auction.
“Chennai Super Kings have played the knockout stages every season. Mumbai Indians, KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad have been consistent as well. Delhi Daredevils and Punjab look very strong this year, so it will be interesting to see how teams fare when they lock horns against each other,” Jaffer added.
