#IStandWithKohli trends on Twitter as fans defend Virat Kohli after his Diwali message

India skipper Virat Kohli recently faced the heat on social media for his message on Diwali. The 32-year old is currently in Sydney, preparing for the upcoming series against Australia. India are scheduled to play three ODIs, three T20Is and the four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series Down Under. The tour will start with the ODI series on November 27.

Kohli will not be able to stay in Australia for the entire tour. The India skipper will lead the team in the limited-overs series and the first Test in Adelaide before returning home for the birth of his first child. The BCCI has already granted paternity leave to Kohli. Anushka Sharma is due to give birth in early January.

Fans defend Virat Kohli:

Ahead of the much-anticipated series against Australia, Virat Kohli has been all over social media for all the wrong reasons. The batting superstar had been widely criticised for his message to his fans on the occasion of Diwali. He posted an 18-second clip on his Twitter handle to wish a ‘happy Diwali’ to everyone. Kohli also urged everyone to not burst crackers in order to protect the environment and celebrate the festival with “simple diya and sweets”.

“A very happy Diwali from me to you and your families. May God bless you with peace, prosperity, and happiness this Diwali. Please remember do not burst crackers, protect the environment and have fun at home with your loved ones with a simple Diya and sweets on this auspicious occasion. God bless you all. Take care,” said Virat Kohli.

But his message did not go down well with some and they slammed the India skipper for his comments. Some went as far as calling him a hypocrite and also involved his wife Anushka while bashing him. However, his true fans once again stood by him during the tough time and threw their support behind the Indian star.
