Former England captain Michael Vaughan who successfully captained his nation for many years has backed Joe Root to be successful as English Test captain and said that the pressures of captaincy won’t deter him but would make him a better batsman just like Virat Kohli. Root was appointed as the England Test captain after Alastair Cook stepped down from his post following a humiliating 4-0 series loss to India.

They also drew a Test series against Pakistan 2-2 at home and went on to lose their first test against Bangladesh. Though it will be a big task for Joe Root but the former captain feels the youngster is ready for the challenge.

“Joe is ready. No question. I get baffled when people say he is not. “Will he be a ready-made, perfect captain from day one? Of course not. Who is? Vaughan wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph.“He has to learn on the job. But most international captains have to do that these days. In terms of clout, he has everything you require to be captain. What more do you need? He is a good man. He is driven. He is always trying to improve. He never settles with what he has got,” he added.

Meanwhile talks having doing rounds that the burden of captaincy might affect Joe Root’s batting but Vaughan feels that Root will take batting to another level after taking up the captaincy and will follow the trend set by India captain Virat Kohli. Ever since taking over the captaincy from MS Dhoni, Kohli has raised the bar to a different level and became the first cricketer in the history of the game to hit 4 double centuries in 4 consecutive series.

“Joe’s biggest challenge will be how captaincy affects his batting,” Vaughan said. It affected mine … (but) to be honest, I think he will be different to me. He is more likely to become Kohli and move his batting on to another level with the responsibility of captaincy,” he signed off.
