Kolkata Knight Riders mentor David Hussey has shown backing towards the young Indian batsman Shubman Gill, who has found himself slightly short of runs in IPL 2021. The Punjab batsman has returned with scores of 15, 33, 21, 0, 11 in the four matches of this season so far.

The statement from the mentor comes right after KKR lost their four successive matches in the IPL 2021. Against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday, Gill batted almost through the powerplay but managed only 11 runs from 19 balls, before getting run out. The former Aussie batsman said that the youngster is very specific and has a great work ethic.

He backed him by noting how wonderfully he batted in his debut Test series in Australia recently. Hussey further went on to say that Gill will become one of the highest run-getters in the league by the time IPL 2021 ends.

Hussey claims Gill is a class individual

“He is a star player, he took the Test match arena by storm in Australia. Shubman is very specific and he has a great work ethic. All I can say is that form will come and go, class is always permanent. He is one class individual, both on and off the field. Mark my words, he will be one of the highest-scoring batsmen by the end of the tournament. He is an absolute class act,” Hussey said while speaking during the post-match virtual press conference.

Against Rajasthan, Gill, and Rana’s slow start to the innings affected KKR and their position in the match. They ended up scoring only 133 runs, which was chased down quite easily. On what has been a good batting surface so far in the tournament, KKR didn’t bat well at the Wankhede Stadium, which caused their loss.

Talking about Russell and when he could’ve come into the game, Hussey noted that the big West Indian was sitting in the dressing room only to come out when a partnership is going on. “It’s a tough one really, we needed to get a partnership going when Andre Russell was ready to come in. Russell is in his scintillating best when he maybe has three-four overs left.

“In a perfect world, he can go at number three and score 200 I guess but wasn’t to be. We will look at all strategies going ahead, everything is on the table,” Hussey said.
