The 2018 FIFA World Cup is currently underway and has already been a witness to some jaw-dropping encounters. Ronaldo lit up the tournament with his hat-trick versus Spain. Yesterday, Australia played France in their first Group C contest. However, they stuttered and lost by 2-1. Prior to the match, France were deemed to be the favorites as they are ranked 7th compared to Australia’s 36th.

Moreover, previously, Australia lost four out of their five opening matches in the World Cup, their last win coming versus Japan way back in 2006. The odds were against them and needed an outstanding performance to turn their fortunes around.  They commenced the match decently and never allowed France to break their defense. It eventually took 58 minutes for France to score their first goal.

A forgettable day for Australia’s sports fraternity

Antoine Griezmann churned out a penalty to take his team on to the lead. To Australia’s relief, Mile Jedinak made amends with the equalizer in the 62nd minute. They held their nerves for the next 18 minutes, but an unfortunate own goal from Aziz Behich again pushed the Aussies back on the backfoot. They fought tooth and nail in the dying stages of the match, but couldn’t evade a defeat.

Apart from football, yesterday Australia didn’t have a joyful time in sports. The cricket team, led by Tim Paine played England in an ODI in Cardiff and lost by 38 runs. Shaun Marsh scored a masterful century, but couldn’t save the day for the Men in Yellow. The rugby team also lost versus Ireland by 21-26 at Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan, the former English batsman, got a golden opportunity to troll his team’s Ashes rivals and he didn’t miss out on the chance to pounce on their age-old opponents. He took to Twitter and wrote

“MORNING Australia …. When was the last time 3 of your National teams all lost on the same day ?? #OnOn,”
