The Mumbai Indians have been dealt with their first injury blow of the season as Australian pacer Pat Cummins has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a back injury. The pacer reportedly suffered the injury in the recently-concluded series in South Africa, something that ended in a disaster for the Aussies as they were embroiled in a ball-tampering scandal.

As far as the 24-year old Cummins is concerned, he was perhaps the brightest player for the Aussies in the series with a plethora of important wickets and an unlikely half-century to his name as well. However, it is also no secret that Cummins has experienced back problems in the past, as does any pace bowler who bowls as quick as Cummins does. It would also seem as though the workload of playing consecutive matches has also gotten to him having played 13 in a row with several bowlers ruled to various different injuries as well.

Cummins was purchased by the Mumbai Indians in the 2018 edition of the IPL Auction for INR 5.4 Cr. However, with the injury crisis, it would seem as though he will certainly be missing out on a massive paycheck, to say the least.

Cummins to take time off bowling

David Beakley, the physiotherapist of the Australian cricket team went ahead and confirmed the extent of the injury as far as Pat Cummins was concerned. He also stated that the pacer is expected to be out of action for a while.

“Pat experienced some back soreness during the fourth Test in South Africa,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (April 10). “Follow-up scans have confirmed that he has bone oedema in his vertebrae. It is important that Pat has time off bowling, to prevent the injury becoming more serious and consequently we have made the decision to rule Pat out of the IPL.

“Pat will now undergo a period of recovery and rehabilitation and we will look to re-scan him in a few weeks to assess the healing,” he added. “Following this we will be in a better position to decide on Pat’s return to play timeline including participation in the limited overs tour of the UK.”
