National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) has been directed by the Union Ministry of sports to proceed with the dope testing in cricket. The orders have come after the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) had written to the ministry regarding the non-compliance by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The controversy with doping arose when the WADA recently published a report in which it was mentioned that one Indian cricketer was found positive during a test in 2016.
The BCCI has not revealed the name of the player so far but has ensured that the matter has been dealt with. They follow the process for only its elite cricketers and share the findings of the test directly with WADA and ICC bypassing NADA. Although the Indian board is not recognised as a national sports federation, the sports ministry deems it as a recognised one as they seek its permission for the tournaments to be played in India.
If BCCI objects then we will deal with it
Rahul Bhatnagar, the secretary of the ministry of youth affairs and sports cleared that NADA will conduct the doping test of the Indian cricketer and will enforce the World Anti Doping Code with full force in cricket. He also revealed that the Indian board objects with the process then the ministry of sports will deal with the issue.
“Yes, a letter has been received by the ministry from WADA complaining about non-compliance in cricket. I have spoken to Director General of NADA Naveen Aggarwal and instructed him to enforce the WADA code in its entirety on Indian cricket,” he said while speaking to the WEEK. “If BCCI objects at any point to tests being conducted by NADA, we will deal with it at that time. As of now, NADA will proceed with tests as per the WADA code on Indian cricketers,” he continued.
