Cricket’s relationship with technology and innovation will be boosted to another level in the upcoming Champions Trophy. A new concept named “smart bats” will be on debut this year. The sensor chips which are placed on the bat handle of the batsman will be able to analyse and process various aspects of the batsman’s game such as the bat speed, angle, movement, etc, throughout the course of the tournament.
The technology will be able to provide a different perspective on the techniques adopted by various cricketers.TIt has been brought about this year by ICC’s partnership with ‘Intel’ as its official innovation partner. ICC Chief Executive had this to say on the new relationship. “This is an exciting announcement for the ICC as we continue to focus on innovation and technology to enhance both the game and the experience of the fan. The innovations we’re working with Intel on for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 are like nothing we’ve seen in the sport before and I’m delighted to welcome them to the ICC family”.

“We will be deploying a range of technology at the event as part of our ongoing effort to bring a new level of data analytics to sports and to revolutionize how athletes train, coaches teach, scouts evaluate talent, and fans enjoy sports.”Three batsmen from each of the eight teams will be selected to test out this new piece of innovation. For India, the players will be Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin. The “smart bats” will not only help in enhancing the viewing experience for cricket lovers but will also help the coaches and the players themselves in analysing their respective technical flaws and working on them.
