Mumbai Indians (MI) are not only one of the two most successful sides in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with three titles but they are also popular for their owners’ involvement with the players. The franchise is owned by the Reliance Group and Nita Ambani, wife of Mukesh Ambani, ensures that she shares space with the MI players every season. She is regularly seen in the stands whenever the team is playing and she makes it a point to share the moments of happiness and despair with the cricketers on the ground.

On Sunday, Nita was seen honouring two players of the MI with a badge and they were Yuvraj Singh and New Zealander Mitchell McClenaghan. The duo was honoured for their top performances in the game even though as a team, the MI were humbled by a revamped Delhi Capitals (DC) who won the clash at the Wankhede Stadium by 37 runs to kick off the season in style. Nita gave the badges in the MI dressing room and wished both the players and asked them to say a few words.

Yuvraj, who scored 53 off 35 balls in the chase of a challenging target of 214 in 20 overs, said he was happy that the game went well for him but wished the team would have also won. “Let’s take the positives from this game,” the 37-year-old said. Mumbai next plays Bangalore in an away game on March 28.

The other player who was honoured, McClenaghan said: “It’s just one loss in 14 games” in a bid to boost the team’s morale. The left-hand pacer took three wickets for 40 runs to become the MI’s most successful bowler in the game. Both players said it is a long tournament and there is all the time to make a comeback.

MI coach Mahela Jayawardene and former India captain Sachin Tendulkar was also seen present in the dressing room, among others. MI skipper Rohit Sharma said in the post-match presentation that the first game in always challenging for most teams since there are new players in the squad.

“We made a lot of mistakes today and that was the reason we lost the match. We were in the game in the first 10 overs while bowling but the way Rishabh batted, we have to give the credit to him. We missed our lengths and failed to execute our plans but that can happen as there are a lot of new guys in the squad and understanding takes a bit of time,” he said, adding the former champions needed to learn quickly from the mistakes.
