When Irfan Pathan made his debut for India back in 2003 during the tour of Australia, he was touted to be the country’s next Kapil Dev. On that tour, the left-arm seamer got rid of the likes of Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden to announce his arrival at the highest level. Having started his career as a teenager under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy, Pathan looked at a bright future.

A couple of years later, he became India’s second bowler after Harbhajan Singh to notch a Test hattrick. The southpaw achieved the feat during a Test against Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi after dismissing Salman Butt, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf. In the previous Test in Faisalabad, he also stitched together a 210-run stand along with wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.

In his first two years at the international level, the Baroda-born Pathan had already become India’s gun bowler in ODIs and T20Is. Irfan wasn’t short of talent in batting as well. He went on to open the batting for the Men in Blue in the 50-overs format. Moreover, the now 36-year-old all-rounder notched one century and six half-centuries in the 29 Tests he played in his career.

Pathan also bagged the Player of the Match award in the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup against Pakistan at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. But from there on, he strained to hold on to his spot in the national team as he kept going in and out of the side. In the 2012 T20 World Cup, Pathan got to don the Men in Blue’s jersey for the last time in his illustrious career.

However, despite his career on the field coming to a close in January 2020 when he announced his retirement, Pathan has continued to grab the limelight. The veteran has taken up commentary as a profession and has been seen sharing his analysis before international and domestic games.

He is currently a part of the commentary team in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. In the meantime, the fans are delighted with Pathan’s commentary. The netizens dropped in tweets, appreciating Pathan for his effortless work with the microphone.
