'One or 100 matches, it is an honor' - Rohit Sharma on occasional captaincy

With Virat Kohli being rested for the 3-match T20I series against Bangladesh; the reins of the team have been handed over to Rohit Sharma. The right-hander is coming off a brilliant Test series against South Africa at home, his first as an opener and slammed three centuries, including a double and a total of 500 plus runs as well.

Rohit has captained India in the past as well, winning Asia Cup 2018 and Nidahas Trophy 2018, apart from multiple bilateral series. Often voices have been raised that Rohit should be handed the captaincy for the 20-over format in a full-time capacity and even the batsman himself has said that he is ready to take over whenever the opportunity comes his way.

With the first T20I match against Bangladesh slated to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on November 3, Rohit Sharma arrived in Delhi for preparations and even mentioned that the air quality has not affected him in any way. He also spoke with press reporters and touched upon the topic of whether this occasional captaincy comes as a burden to him.

“These things (captaincy) are not in our hands. One or 100 matches, it is an honor. When we were growing up, it was all about playing for the country. I have captained the team and the experience has been good and I don’t think about how long I should be made captain. Whenever I get the chance to captain the team, I try and enjoy that,” Rohit was quoted as saying by India Today.

Apart from that, the new Indian Test opener also talked about India’s historic first day-night Test match which will be played against Bangladesh in Kolkata from November 22. He mentioned his experience of playing with pink balls and the dew factor which might come into play during the match. The match will be played on the ground on which he made his Test debut, scored 264* in an ODI and has an overall good record.

“I am very excited as it is the first time. I can’t say about others, but I played one match in Duleep Trophy with the pink ball and it was a good experience. The opportunity has come and will try to do well. I always try to do well and for me, the thought is to not stop. My job is to keep performing and I see it that way. Be it Bangladesh or West Indies after that, or when we go to New Zealand,” Rohit further added.
