Ranji Trophy 2019-20: Round 5, Day 1- Round-up

Cheteshwar Pujara hogged the limelight after the veteran scored a brilliant unbeaten knock of 162 runs against Karnataka.

The fifth round of the ongoing 2019-20 Ranji Trophy kicked off across the length and breadth of the country today. Bihar shellacked Manipur’s bowling force as they posted 308 runs on the board at the loss of five wickets on the first day. Indrajit Kumar steered the limelight as he smashed 134 runs while opening the innings for Bihar. He was assisted by Rahmatullah, who also scored 67 runs while coming down the order.

Assam’s bowlers were on a roll in their encounter against Chattisgarh. However, Amandeep Khare’s steady knock of 105 runs steered Chattisgarh to a total of 276 runs at the loss of seven wickets. In the Plate group encounter between Puducherry and Goa, skipper Amit Sharma led his side from the front as he guided Goa to post 205 runs on the scoreboard at the end of Day 1. Amit Verma scored a crucial 91-run knock to withstand Puducherry’s bowling force comprising Vinay Kumar, Sagar Trivedi and Ashith Rajiv.

Another skipper Parvez Rasool as stood out for his side as he steadied Jammu and Kashmir‘s ship on Day 1. Rasool scored 144 runs to help his side post 282 runs on the board. Opener Shubham Khajuria also scored a brilliant half-century against a formidable Services bowling force comprising Diwesh Pathania, Sachidanand Pandey and Poonam Poonia.

In the encounter between Kerala and Punjab, the latter’s bowlers showcased a strong bowling performance. Siddharth Kaul, Baltej Singh and Vinay Choudhary scalped three wickets each to restrict Kerala to 227 runs. Salman Nizar was the solitary warrior for Kerala, who remained unbeaten on 91 runs. Andhra bowlers also wreaked havoc against Hyderabad’s batting line-up.

KV Sasikanth scalped a fifer to dismantle Hyderabad’s innings and he was assisted by Yarra Prithviraj, who scalped three wickets. Hyderabad could only amass a modest total of 225 runs on the scoreboard on Day 1. Shrikanth Mundhe also played a stellar knock of 166 runs against Arunachal Pradesh to steer Nagaland to 356/5.

In the encounter between Saurashtra and Karnataka, Cheteshwar Pujara hogged the limelight after the veteran scored a brilliant unbeaten knock of 162 runs. The right-hander was assisted by Sheldon Jackson, who also remained unbeaten on 99 runs as the Karnataka bowling force proved ineffective against the Saurashtra’s batting stalwarts.
