The former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has advised Matt Renshaw to focus on basics to come back into the national side. The youngster was dropped from Australia squad for the first two Ashes Tests much to his disappointment. He managed only 70 runs in six innings in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season and hence was dropped for the all-important series. However, Ponting feels that the left-hander should continue playing domestic cricket and come back strongly.

Renshaw was the part of the touring party which travelled India and Bangladesh earlier this year. He did exceedingly well on both the tours in terms of biding his time in the middle. Also, his last knock in Australia was a sensational 184 against Pakistan in the day-night Test match at Adelaide. But the selectors felt he was out of touch and Ashes would not be the right platform to regain his confidence. Cameron Bancroft replaced him who scored runs in abundance in domestic cricket and is set to make his debut in Brisbane at the Gabba.

Ponting’s message to Renshaw

Ricky Ponting believes that the 20-year-old batsman is extremely talented and has suggested him to move on and focus on the basics of his batting. “The thing I learned most was not to be in too big a rush to get back there. Funnily enough, the harder you try to push something like that and the faster you make things happen the longer it takes. That was a lesson that I learned from it.Just go back to the basics, go back to Shield cricket, focus on some of the things he focused on before when he’d been successful and be patient. It’ll come back for him, I’m sure,” he told cricket.com.au.

Renshaw, on the other hand, was disappointed after he was axed from the squad following the poor returns in the domestic season. “I’m pretty disappointed, to be honest. The selectors called me. We had a chat. They said I simply didn’t score enough runs, which is fair enough. I’ve been feeling good, but I just haven’t been getting runs on the board,” he told News Corp on Friday.
