After a 22-year struggle that started soon after he retired from international cricket in 1992, Imran Khan is on the verge of taking oath as the next Prime Minister of Pakistan. Among all his colleagues, cricketers from the generation and from the current era who congratulated him on a monumental victory is former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar.

The Mumbai-born batsman called the World Cup-winner his cricketing hero and stated that the Pakistani is the epitome of setting the bar high and then reaching it. The 2018 election was considered a make or break occasion for Imran and thus he invested all his energies into it this time and ensured that his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the single largest party though is still short of the numbers for a majority in the assembly.

PTI won 109 out of the 269 seats that were contested in the National Assembly whereas the figure required to form the government is at least 137. Results are yet to be announced on 20 seats and he is hopeful that components from the opposition will also support his bid to give the people of Pakistan a new government.

Manjrekar in his congratulatory tweet wrote: “Imran is the epitome of setting the bar high and reaching it. Congratulations & good luck to my cricketing hero, Imran Khan!”

Imran’s statement

Imran after the victory in a statement addressing the people of his country said: “This election is a historic election in Pakistan. In this election, people have sacrificed a lot. There was terrorism in this election. I want to especially praise the people of Balochistan, the kind of difficulties that they had to face. The way they came out to vote, I want to thank all those people.”

He also announced the recently held elections to be the fairest in the history of the country while a lot of other parties have been claiming that it was rigged.

“I feel that this election has been the fairest in Pakistan’s history. If any party has any doubts, we will open the results of those constituencies up for investigation,” Khan said.
