Shubman Gill is one name that has been doing rounds in Indian cricket over the last 12 to 18 months. He has caught everyone’s attention with some eye-catching performances. The 19-year-old Punjab batsman has done well in grade cricket, in the U-19 World Cup, in the domestic circuit for his Ranji side and for India ‘A’. He has churned out runs consistently.
Hence, he finally got a deserved break in the Indian team in New Zealand a couple of months back. However, things didn’t go in Gill’s favour as he could score just 16 runs in two games he played. He batted at No. 3 in the absence of Virat Kohli and failed to make a mark in his first two international games. He was omitted from the ODI series against Australia at home and hence, subsequently has been overlooked for the World Cup.
However, the 19-year-old batsman is not perturbed by the snub. He admitted that he has to play his game and move in the right direction. Gill feels that if he is in the right direction, results will follow. “This year’s World Cup is not the last World Cup in cricket. I think that you just can’t keep chasing the same thing all the time. If you are in the right direction, you will get your results. For me, it’s really important to play my game and be in the right direction. With that, I believe, other things will follow,” Gill was quoted saying to kkr.in.
I was very excited to play in the top order: Gill
Shubman Gill has been with the Kolkata Knight Riders for a couple of years now. However, in both the years, he hasn’t got a lot of opportunities to bat at the top of the order. He has largely been batting at No. 6 and 7. However, this year, he got the opportunity to open the batting in one game against Delhi Capitals in the absence of Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn. He cashed in his opportunity as he struck a fine 65.
“I was very excited as I was playing at the top order for the first time this year. So I really wanted to cash in on this opportunity. Jacques Kallis told me not to be nervous about it and play the way I do on nets and not to take any pressure,” Gill said.
