Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) aspirations to win a title dwindled further as they suffered yet another heartbreaking loss, falling short by one run against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, April 21. RCB are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table with a sole victory in eight games.
Upon winning the toss, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis invited Shreyas Iyer and Co. to bat first. The opening duo of Phil Salt and Sunil Narine provided a solid start to their innings, contributing 56 runs for the opening wicket. Mohammed Siraj was the first to provide a significant breakthrough for RCB, dismissing Salt for 48 in the fifth over. Despite missing a half-century, Salt's 48-run was particularly impressive as he achieved it in just 14 deliveries, including seven boundaries and three maximums at an astounding strike rate of 342.86.
Soon after Salt's departure, Yash Dayal made a quick impact, sending back Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi in the sixth over. Cameron Green joined forces with Siraj and Dayal, dismissing Venkatesh Iyer for 16, further showcasing RCB's dominance. However, at No. 5, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer impressed with a brisk 50 off 36 before being dismissed by Green, and by that time they had reached 179/6. Later, Ramandeep Singh's quickfire 24* off 9 balls propelled KKR to post a commanding total of 222 runs.

In pursuit of the 223-run chase, RCB started confidently with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis opening the innings. However, they faced a setback after Kohli's unfortunate dismissal by Harshit Rana in the third over. Despite this hurdle, the RCB captain attempted to lead his side from the front but was dismissed by Varun Chakaravarthy in the very next over.
However, Will Jacks (55) partnered with Rajat Patidar (52) in the middle when RCB were at 35/2. The duo wasted no time, swiftly boosting the scoring rate and adding 102 runs for the third wicket. Jacks reached his maiden IPL fifty off 29 balls, while Patidar achieved the milestone off a mere 21 deliveries. Unfortunately, both batters fell victim to KKR's seasoned all-rounder Andre Russell in the 12th over.
After these dismissals, not even RCB's 'saviour' Dinesh Karthik could rescue them. Nevertheless, Karn Sharma's promising performance offered a glimmer of hope for the visiting side. In the crucial final over, with RCB needing 21 runs, Sharma smashed a maximum off Mitchell Starc in the first delivery. After RCB's successful review of a not-out decision, Sharma followed up with back-to-back sixes.
Unfortunately, his innings came to an end in the penultimate delivery as he was caught and bowled, after scoring 20 off just 7 deliveries. Despite this misfortune, RCB still maintained hopes of victory. In a tense final delivery, when Siraj and Lockie Ferguson attempted to take three runs off the final delivery but the latter was run out by Salt, allowing KKR to seal a narrow one-run victory.
