Veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami set a new record as the quickest bowler to reach fifty wickets in the history of ICC Cricket World Cups. He achieved the feat during the first semifinal between India and New Zealand in the ongoing tournament at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15, Wednesday.

Shami was crucial during the clash while India are defending the mammoth total of 397 runs. He provided two early breakthroughs for the Rohit Sharma-led side, dismissing Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, respectively. Despite Shami's efforts, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell spearheaded New Zealand's charge.

Notably, on the second delivery of the 33rd over, Shami delivered a pivotal breakthrough by dismissing the Kiwi captain for 69 runs. Continuing his impact, he claimed his 50th wicket in the tournament in the same over by dismissing wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham for a two-ball duck. Shami's delivery, angled in around the good length in the middle, skidded through as Latham attempted to flick it away. Unfortunately, the Kiwi batter closed the face too early, resulting in a hit on the pads right in front of the stumps. The subsequent LBW appeal was successful, leading to the Kiwi's dismissal.

Mohammed Shami is having a dream ODI World Cup campaign for Team India

Mohammed Shami is enjoying an outstanding campaign in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Despite being on the bench for the first four games, the veteran pacer was included in the playing XI for India's fifth clash against New Zealand in Dharamshala. Remarkably, he proved his worth by securing a five-wicket haul for 54 runs and earned the Player of the Match award in his debut match in the ongoing tournament.

Maintaining his sensational form, Shami delivered another exceptional performance against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In that match, he achieved a career-best figure of 5/18, contributing significantly to India's convincing 302-run victory against their neighbours. So far, he has claimed a total of 20 wickets in six innings, boasting an impressive average of 9.10 and an economy rate of 4.85.
