Mumbai Indians registered a statement victory against defending champions Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede, largely due to their star middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav's maiden IPL century. Following his dazzling innings, Suryakumar joked about his wife, who finally got to witness one of his centuries.
The five-time champions are firing on all cylinders in the latter stages of the tournament, with Suryakumar Yadav also rediscovering his golden touch with the bat in recent matches. The explosive batter spellbound a full house crowd at the Wankhede with his trademark innovative shots, smashing a 49-ball century, his first in IPL, for the home side.
Following his milestone century, the no. 1 ranked T20 batter in the world joked that no one could blame him now for hitting a century in his wife's absence as she was present in the stands to witness SKY's maiden IPL century. Incidentally, she did not witness any of his previous three centuries for the Indian team.
"Good to see my family here and especially my wife Devisha. She missed all three international hundreds of mine. So now no one can say that I scored hundred because she is not there in the stadium (laughs). It was my first IPL hundred, and in such a crucial game it helped the team to win. So I am really relaxed now. I play the same shots that I practice in the training sessions and I am always excited to bat," Suryakumar said in a conversation with Akash Madhwal in a video posted by IPL.
Meanwhile, Mumbai's young pacer Akash Madhwal, who was subbed in for the second innings, repaid the faith of his skipper Rohit Sharma by getting rid of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill in the powerplay. He also dismissed the dangerous David Miller to derail Gujarat Titans' chase.
"I was very confident in my bowling and Rohit Bhaiya backed me to bowl well and stick to my plans," Madhwal said in the interview with SKY.
