Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly is an ardent follower of the game of football as well. Ganguly, who hails from Kolkata, is one of the most popular footballing destinations in India. Ganguly also owns a team in the Indian Super League (ISL), the homegrown Indian footballing league. with the 2018 edition of the football World Cup nearing, the fans have started picking up their favorites for the marquee tournament.

Sourav Ganguly is not far behind either in giving his top preferences for the side. The former Indian skipper noted that he is eagerly waiting for the event to start. He remarked that he is a big fan of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi. Messi is a highly revered player in the sport who is often seen as one of the greatest of the game. He, however, is yet to win a World Cup for his country. He had retired from international football, but reversed his decision.

This season, he will hope to win the tournament for his fans back home. Sourav, however, noted that whilst he likes to see Lionel Messi plays, his favorite team remains to be Brazil.

“I will look forward to Messi. He’s yet to win a World Cup. It’s going to be a big World Cup for him,” Sourav Ganguly quoted as per the quotes in NDTV. “Brazil is my favourite team but I am a fan of Messi,” the former Indian captain added further.

On Arjun Tendulkar’s U19 selection

Another big headline that is trending over the last couple of days is the selection of Arjun Tendulkar in the India U19 side. Arjun, who is the son of former legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, has been selected for the U19 side that will play four-day fixtures in Sri Lanka. Sourav Ganguly wished him all the luck for the series and hopes that Arjun will do well.

“Lot of best wishes to him. I have never seen him playing. I hope he does well,” mentioned Ganguly.

On India’s tour of England

Team India’s next major assignment in international cricket is going to the tour of England. Sourav believes that the Indian team has a very good chance of winning the series. Team Pakistan had recently beaten England at Lord’s by 9 wickets. Ganguly reckons that the Indian team is far better than the Pakistani lineup. Hence, even they should find it easy to beat the English side which is on the shaky ground at the moment in Test cricket.

“I’m very hopeful that India will win in England. The way they have played the ODI series in South Africa, if they are able to hold back the momentum they will absolutely win. India are a far better side than Pakistan. India will have the chances of winning the series,” Ganguly said with optimism.
