Shankar Basu, the Indian cricket team’s strength and conditioning coach, has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a break. The news comes few days after it was suddenly reported that Basu was willing to resign from his position. It is reported by Sportstar Live that the famed trainer wants has taken this decision due to compelling family and business reasons and wants for ‘leave’ till the Champions Trophy, which begins in England in June 2017.

Basu has been associated with the Indian team since the start of their tour of Sri Lanka and has also had a direct impact on some of the players. He also has business ventures and runs a very successful Fitness studio in Chennai and is also popular in the sports world having worked with certain athletes across various sports as well.

However, prior to the conclusion of the Chennai Test, Basu put his resignation letter. The Board, as expected wasn’t keen on letting a trainer of his quality go. But, given the situation, the BCCI might appoint an interim strength and conditioning coach till the Champions Trophy.

Before the CT 2017, India will play home ODIs and T20s against England, the one-off Test against Bangladesh, before taking on Australia in four home Tests. After that, India will largely play away from home and Basu’s will play a key role in maintaining the fitness of the players.

Basu has popularly introduced the ‘Dexa Scan’ in the Indian team training methods. A dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, it is a special type of x-ray that measures bone mineral density. He also brought in the load monitoring app, which shows how much work a cricketer has put in and how much his body can withstand, bringing in objective data.

The Yo-Yo endurance training, a variation of the beep method, a maximal running aerobic fitness test, was also employed by Basu, who believed in specific training for each format. Apart from his work with Kohli, Basu’s job with the Indian pace trio of Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has also been greatly appreciated.
