The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has announced the 16-man squad for the Super League stage of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018. TN side was a formidable force in the Zonal league of the tournament that took place over the last few days. Coming in to the Super League, they will be locking horns with the top performers from the other zones in the competition.
Needless to concede, they will be expected to up their game a level more as they head in to the competition. Ahead of the tournament, Tamil Nadu received a big blow in the form of their regular skipper and veteran player Dinesh Karthik. Karthik was named in the Indian side as the replacement for Wriddhiman Saha on the current tour of South Africa. This, in essence, ruled him out of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018.
In his absence, the TNCA has announced a new captain to lead the side in the coveted domestic tournament. Senior player Vijay Shankar is all set to lead Tamil Nadu in the Super League now. It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Vijay Shankar will be taking charge of the team as the captain. He has captained the state team before and was at the helm of the state cricket in the same tournament last year as well.
In other news, senior batsman Abhinav Mukund has been left out of the squad as well. In his place, Ganga Sridhar Raju has received a call up to the team. Talking about the tournament, the Super League will commence on January 21. It will end with the finals to be played on January 27.
Earlier in the Zonal league, Tamil Nadu had finished at the second position in South Zone behind Karnataka. Interestingly, both teams were separated only by the net run rate.
