Imran Khan recently became the Honourable Prime Minister of Pakistan after his political party Tehreek-e-Insaf won the General Elections on July 25, 2018, with 109 seats out of 269. They competed with Pakistan’s Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and comfortably brushed them aside. Meanwhile, former Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara has also expressed his desire to join politics.
Khan’s foray into the political fraternity is assumed to be the reason behind Sangakkara’s contemplation to ply his trade in politics. The wicketkeeper-batsman retired from international cricket after playing the quarterfinal of the 2015 Cricket World Cup against South Africa and bowed out at a time when he was at his peak. The veteran notched 541 runs in seven matches at a gigantic average of 108.20.
Sangakkara contemplating new career?
Moreover, he smacked four centuries in the event, which is the most by any batsman in a single edition of the World Cup. His career spanned 15 years in which he played 134 Tests, 404 ODIs, and 56 T20Is. He is also the owner of 27,000+ runs along with 63 centuries and 153 half-centuries in international cricket and they aren’t mere numbers by any stretch of the imagination.
He currently plays in franchise cricket across the globe. Following his retirement, Sangakkara was offered the Sri Lankan High Commissioner’s Post, however, he declined the same citing reasons of a hectic schedule. Last week, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne told that they would support Sangakkara if he enters politics.
The 40-year-old hasn’t made an official statement on his political career, but it has been speculated that he would be in the thick of things by the 2020 Presidential Elections. Meanwhile, many also reckon that the former cricketer lacks experience and acumen to taste success at the political level. In the meantime, Twitter shows their excitement after the reports broke.
Here is how Twitter reacted
Sorry guys, the Sri Lankan equivalent to Imran Khan is not Kumar Sangakkara, it’s Arjuna Ranatunga. (Purely in terms on cricket, I know nothing about either one’s political affiliations)
