Australia and England faced off in the second match of the ongoing T20 International tri-series at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Wednesday. While the home side were coming off a brilliant victory over New Zealand in the opening game, their Ashes rivals England were playing their first match of the series. The fans expected a lot of fireworks on the day but the spinners ruled the proceedings on a slow wicket. However, Twitter was excited for the game and flooded in their tweets throughout the first innings as England were restricted to 155.

Australia captain David Warner opted to bowl first after winning the toss as they had chased down the total in the opening game as well. England’s fearless approach continued as their openers Jason Roy and Alex Hales accumulated boundaries early on. But the former misread the slower one from Kane Richardson only to spoon the catch to Andrew Tye. Dawid Malan and Hales then added 44 runs in quick time as the visitors looked set to post a huge total.

Spinners strangle down England

Ashton Agar scalped Hales off the very first delivery of his spell after which he sent back the dangerous Sam Billings in his second spell. Meanwhile, Malan played beautifully and notched up his second consecutive half-century in the shortest format. But the spinners of Australia strangled them down and England collapsed from being 109/3 to 127/8. Both Agar and Glenn Maxwell made sure that they picked wickets at regular intervals and shared as many as five scalps between them.

Maxwell right-arm off-spin surprised the poms as they gifted away three wickets to him. Eventually, they were bowled out for 155, the score, which at one stage looked like getting close to 200 at the half-way mark. The hero of the last match, Billy Stanlake, had a poor outing as he conceded 43 runs picking only the wicket of Adil Rashid. While the spin-bowling duo conceded only 25 runs in 5 overs and scalped five wickets. Andrew Tye was exceptional once again at the death and cleaned up the tail.

Twitterati was shocked to watch England collapse against the part-time spin of Maxwell and hailed the home side for coming back strongly in the last 10 overs.
