If cricket is a religion then Sachin Tendulkar is a god. We have heard this time and again during one of the most celebrated careers cricket has ever since. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is arguably the greatest batsman to have played cricket. During his glorious 24-year-old career, Sachin entertained the cricketing world with mind-blogging feats.

The Mumbaikar has all the major batting records to his name in both Test and ODI cricket. He has the most number of runs, centuries and half-centuries in both forms of the game to his name. His record of scoring 100 international centuries will never be conquered, just like the great Bradman’s Test average of 99.94.

Tendulkar called it time on his international career in November 2013. In his last Test match, he became the first player to have ever played 200 Test matches in a career. Playing that many Test matches is a hallmark of his greatness and effectiveness for a long period of time.

Born with a special talent, Sachin was tipped to play for the country at a tender age of 14. He was a child prodigy who went on to realize his full potential in international cricket.

The other great aspect of his outstanding career was his work ethic. He never took his place in the side for granted and was always keen to contribute to the team’s cause. The maestro played a number of memorable knocks, none better than the twin hundreds in Sharjah against a powerful Australia who were floored in the Tri-series final in 1998.

His 143 first helped them qualify for the finals and in the finals, on this very day 19 years ago; Sachin played another blinder of an innings of 134 to make light weight of a stiff target of 273.

During the 90’s, he was the lone warrior and carried the team literally on his shoulders. It was only by the turn of the millennium, that Sachin found support from fellow batsmen but yet he kept producing brilliant knocks one after the other.

The longevity of his career, coupled with his outstanding achievements, demanded a World Cup win in his already stupendous cricket career. Playing in his 6th World Cup, also the last of his career, Tendulkar fulfilled the dream of his and a billion people by winning the ICC World Cup 2011.

A tearful Sachin was seen lifting the Trophy at the Wankhede, which is a sight that still raises the hair. He contributed to that win as well. Aged 37, Sachin scored 482 runs, the second highest in the tournament, in 9 innings which included two brilliant hundreds.

The great man celebrates his 44th birthday today and people were quick to wish the master on Twitter. We bring you the best tweets here:
