Manchester Originals have already been knocked out of the Hundred after languishing at the bottom of the table for the chunk of the event. However, they can turn out to be party-spoilers for a number of teams. On Thursday, the Kate Cross-led team beat Northern Superchargers by eight wickets at the Headingley in Leeds. The loss has left the Superchargers in a must-win scenario for their last match.
Wolvaardt guides the Superchargers
After being put in to bat first, the Superchargers got off to a horrendous start. In 19 balls, they were reduced to 16 for four. Skipper Lauren Winfield, Jemimah Rodrigues, Alice Davidson Richards, and Bess Heath couldn’t get into double digits. Kate Cross picked up three of those four wickets even as the other scalp went to Hannah Jones. From there on, Laura Wolvaardt took charge of her team.
Halfway through the innings, she also lost Netherlands’ Sterre Kallis as her partner. Kallis looked promising, having scored a 21-ball 19 with two fours. But Wolvaardt held his ground and notched an unbeaten 51-ball knock of 75 with 10 fours and one six. Her knock helped the Superchargers post a respectable score of 126 on the board. She was also involved in a 72-run stand with Linsey Smith.
Lizelle Lee steps up
In the run-chase, the Originals came out all guns blazing. Lizelle Lee and Emma Lamb stitched together a 50-run stand for the opening wicket off 27 balls. Even as Lamb got out after a run-a-ball 10, it was Lee, who stepped on the gas. The latter made sure that the required rate didn’t climb up. The South African batter got to her fifty off a mere 27 balls and showed what she is capable of.
Mignon du Preez, her Proteas’ teammate, lent her the required support. When Lee perished, the Originals needed only 25 runs off 29 balls with eight wickets in hand. Lee went on to score 68 off 40 with as many as 13 fours and one six. In the end, a couple of fours from Cordelia Griffith helped the Originals over the finishing line. The Superchargers, meanwhile, went on a three-match losing streak.
