Veteran Pakistani cricketer and the current skipper of the Test team, Misbah Ul Haq, recently announced his retirement from the longest form of the game. The bilateral series against West Indies will be his last assignment as the Test captain of the national side. He has been a pillarstone for the Pakistani cricket team for quite some time now. Very recently, he was named in the 5 Wisden Cricketers of the Year by the Wisden Almanack.

The prestigious accolade in itself is a testimony of how valuable an asset the middle order batsman has been for the team. The Pakistan cricket was in deep shatters and was taken aback by the infamous 2010 spot fixing scandal when the national side toured England. Three key players, including the then skipper Salman Butt, were found guilty of spot fixing that subsequent led to their bans from international cricket.

It was then that the board handed over the captaincy to Misbah Ul Haq. The spot fixing had rocked the team already. Add the certain ‘no home Test matches’ scene to it to make things precarious for the national side. Misbah had a tough ask at hand to rebuild the team and he did that exceedingly well.

With UAE being the home venue for the Pakistani team, Misbah ensured that his side made UAE as their fortress in absence of default home venues. The team emerged as an almost invincible unit in the desert conditions under his leadership. He also impressed in the overseas tours. When Pakistan toured England in 2016, he led his side to a series leveling effort.

Also, during the series, he scored a magnificent ton at the Lords as a 42 year old young man. From the deepest points to the zenith, the journey of Misbah Ul Haq remains an anecdote worth sharing for generations. Here is how the Twitter world reacted to his retirement:
