In yet another rain-curtailed encounter in the Champions Trophy, Pakistan managed to keep up with the required rate as they won the game by 19 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis Stern method. With this loss, South Africa face a must-win situation in their last game against India. Pakistan too have a task at hand as they’ve got to defeat Sri Lanka and then let the NRR decide the rest.

Earlier in the day, South Africa who elected to bat first after winning the toss put themselves in a tricky situation. The Big 3 of the Proteas, i.e. Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers were back the pavilion with just 61 runs on the board. The South Africans continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as they struggled against a bowling lineup that conceded 320 against India.

David Miller who had been going through a bad phase made his mark with a sensational 75 runs which included a boundary and three sixes. The Proteas managed to cross the 200-run barrier courtesy of his knock. Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada provided ample support to Miller in the end as they posted a total of 219/8.

Hasan Ali was the bowling star for the Pakistani side as he had figures of 3/24. Imad Wasim bagged the prized wickets of Amla and AB. Junaid Khan also got a couple of wickets while Mohammed Hafeez who didn’t bowl in the last game against India also managed to get a wicket.

Pakistan were surprisingly off to a splendid start as debutant Fakhar Zaman scored a quickfire 31 (23). However, Morne Morkel struck twice in an over to put Pakistan on the backfoot as both the openers were sent back to the pavilion. That’s when Babar Azam and Mohammed Hafeez took things in their hands. Both tried to hang in at the crease for as long as they could without losing a wicket. There was a stage where these two batsmen played as many as 20 dot balls on the trot.

Pakistan were 119/3 when the rain came in and refused to stop. With 27 overs bowled, the DLS method came into play. Pakistan won the game as they were 19 runs ahead of the par score. The Group B scenarios for semis are still wide open with all teams in the fray to go ahead.
