St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were up against the Jamaica Tallawahs in a crucial encounter. The start of this match had to be delayed by an hour due to wet outfield. However, once the action began, it treated the fans with some great entertainment. Some big hitting on display from both the teams in the rain-affected game.
The second innings had to be reduced to 11 overs and the Patriots won the game by 7 wickets despite being set a daunting target. Rassie van der Dussen was the ‘Man of the Match’ for his brilliant innings under pressure. Also, Chris Gayle and Mahmudullah were among the runs. The trio’s efforts overshadowed the great show from Rovman Powell. By winning this game, the Patriots have knocked out both St Lucia Stars and Barbados Tridents out of the playoff race.
Powell’s big hitting propel Tallawahs
The Jamaica Tallawahs lost the toss and hence were put into bat first. Although they got to a good start, the team lost two quick wickets early on in the innings. The wicketkeeper Glenn Phillips looked good with his 40 off 29 balls. However, Johnson Charles and Kennar Lewis got out for 13 and 9 runs respectively.
Rovman Powell walked out into the middle and set the stage on fire with his big hitting skills. He smashed 84 off 40 balls before getting out in the 19th over of the innings. David Miller, with 32 off 20 balls, and Colin de Grandhomme, with a quick-fire 14 off 5 balls, also contributed as the team posted 206 runs on the board for the loss of 6 wickets. Ben Cutting picked two wickets with the ball.
Dussen’s blitz steer Patriots to a win
In the chase, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots got off to an ideal start with the ‘Universe Boss’, Chris Gayle going all guns blazing right from the word go. Although Evin Lewis was dismissed for a duck, it didn’t impact Gayle’s flow. Van der Dussen who came in at No 3 showed some great intent and played his shots. The side reached 65 runs at the end of 6.3 overs before the rain gods decided to interrupt the game once again. The Patriots, according to the DLS method, were 7 runs ahead of the target at this point in time.
After the rain subsided, the innings was reduced to 11 overs with the target being 118. It meant that the hosts had to get 53 off 27 balls to win the game. After the break, Gayle started off with a six but soon, the Tallawahs bowlers struck back with two wickets in two balls dismissing both Gayle and Cutting. But still, Dussen and Mahmudullah kept their cool. While the former scored 45 off 24 deliveries, it took just 11 balls for his partner to score 28 runs as the Patriots won the game by 7 wickets and five balls left.
Twitterati was glad to see the Patriots make it into the playoffs. They hailed Gayle, Dussen and Mahmudullah for their brilliant innings. At the same time, they felt bad for Rovman Powell whose brilliant knock went in vain.
Here is how Twitter reacted:
Duckworth/Lewis method could lose us this cricket bet. Would be so unlucky if so, Jamaica gone from 4/5 to 7/2 because of this rain delay… #CPL

I'm a firm believer of having a good NRR. I also believe in maximizing on runs during the power play. You never know what can happen. @alexy501 #CPL18
