A thundering marathon knock from Ross Taylor saw team New Zealand win the fourth ODI of their ongoing assignment against England. Coming in to the game, the Kiwis were under pressure considering the fact that the series was on the line. They arrived at the venue in Dunedin trailing 2-1 in the five-match ODI series. A win in this game would have helped them stay afloat in the competition.

And to do so, they needed their senior players to step up and take responsibility. When the moment arrived, Ross Taylor was at the task with his sheer class and elegance. Taylor was, in fact, unlucky to have not scored a double century in the game. His efforts saw New Zealand beat England by 5 wickets. Earlier in the game, the Kiwis had won the toss and opted to field first.

The move certainly did not work with the English openers adding 77 runs for the first wicket. After the departure of Jason Roy in the 11 over, more agony beckoned the hosts. Jonny Bairstow (138) and Joe Root (102) stacked up individual tons to put the visitors in a commanding position. The two batsmen took the attack to the opposition. The second wicket partnership between them was worth 190 runs.

Once the partnership was broken, it was all a debacle for the English side. From a position of being at 267/1, the team slumped to 305/8. This, in a way brought New Zealand back in to the game. England finished with 335/9 in their stipulated 50 overs.

In the runchase, the Kiwis were dented early with both their openers back in the hut with only 2 runs on the board. Senior players Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor then rebuilt the innings. After Williamson departed for 45, Taylor found ideal support in Tom Latham, who scored 71 on the day. Meanwhile, Taylor continued to anchor the innings. He remained unbeaten on 181 that came off 147 deliveries with 17 fours and sixes. He ensured that his team got over the line. The two teams will now meet at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Saturday for the series decider.

Here is how the fans reacted to Taylor’s knock and the Kiwi win:
