Peshawar Zalmi were set to take on Islamabad United in the second encounter of the day. After a high-scoring first match, fans had similar expectations for this one too. Wahab Riaz won the toss and decided that the Peshawar side would bowl first. They had won their previous two encounters chasing and were therefore high on confidence.
Islamabad United did not get off to a good start as they lost three wickets within the powerplay. They were yet playing at a good run rate thanks to the aggressive batting of Alex Hales. His knock of 41 runs in just 27 balls was the only inning of substance for the Islamabad side. It included five boundaries and one six.
The rest of the batting line-up failed miserably as only two other batsmen entered double-digit figures which led to a massive collapse for the side. They were bundled out for 118 runs in just 17.1 overs in what was a very poor display of batting.
Wahab Riaz stars with the ball to hand Peshawar an easy win
Captain Wahab Riaz led from the front as he secured four wickets conceding only 17 runs on his quota of four overs. Saqid Mahmood too was very impressive as he got three wickets to his name. A target of 119 was the lowest in this year’s PSL and it would’ve needed a special effort to defend this score.
The Islamabad side did get a couple of wickets but could not carry forward the momentum from thereon. Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Shoaib Malik were involved in a 63-run partnership which was pretty much enough to seal the game for their side. The former scored 46 runs while the latter was unbeaten on 29.
Haider Ali provided the finishing touches and helped his side cruise to a six-wicket win with 17 balls to spare. His knock of 36 off 18 balls included three fours and three sixes. Hasan Ali did very well with the ball as he got two wickets conceding only 14 runs in his four overs but was unable to win the game for his side. This was the first loss of the season for the United side and they would hope to quickly bounce back.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Geez I hope Haider Ali goes on to fulfill his wonderful ability. He is some ball striker. Well done again @PeshawarZalmi
