Watch: Sehwag kicks the ball to boundary and gets fined: Virender Sehwag tried to be smart to keep opposition’s No.11 batsman on the strike in dying overs of a Test match by kicking the ball to the boundary in order to avoid conceding a single. But rather ended up being penalized by the Umpire for his act.

During 2nd Test between India and South Africa in 2010 at Eden gardens, India needed 1 wicket in last 4 overs to level the series and regain their No.1 ranking in Tests with Hashim Amla and Morne Morkel at the crease.

Indian captain MS Dhoni passed the ball to Sachin Tendulkar who didn’t concede any run in first 4 balls against Hashim Amla. On 5th delivery, Amla punched the ball on the back foot which went racing towards the boundary with Sehwag chasing it. However, the ball stopped just an inch ahead of the boundary. Amla had just run a single by then, Sehwag kicked the ball to the boundary to keep Morne Morkel on strike for the next over.

However, Australian Umpire Steve Davis had a talk with the 3rd umpire regarding it and gave 1 run for the shot and penalized 5 runs for kicking the ball which were added to South African total. Later India went on to win the game by innings margin with 9 balls remaining in the game.
