Prior to the commencement of the 10th edition of the IPL, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was removed as the captain of the Rising Pune Supergiant due to their poor show in the previous edition of the IPL, where they finished second last in the tournament.

A new captain was appointed by the show runners of the Supergiant and it was none other than the young Australian skipper Steve Smith. However, Smith indirectly cited out that he would lead the side in his own way and would not seek opinions from MS Dhoni.

“I have plenty of guys to talk to, but I will not seek too many opinions. Seeking too many opinions can cloud your own judgement. I want to try and stay as clear as possible. But yes, if someone sees something and feels the need to point it out to me, they are more than welcome,” said Smith before the tournament.

As it turned out, in the pressure cooker situation of the last night’s Maharashtra Derby, Smith was forced to seek advice from the man who has been under such situation almost his entire cricketing career. With 17 needed off the last over, Smith seemed perplexed over proceedings as Rohit Sharma was smashing everything to the boundary.

The Captain Cool, MS Dhoni, advised going with Jaydev Unadkat instead of the other bowlers. Ajinkya Rahane later confirmed in the post-match press conference that even though Smith is the official captain of the side when it comes to crunch situations, it is Dhoni who calls the shots.

The RPS side beat the Mumbai Indians by 3 runs in the end, thereby, winning both the rounds of Maharashtra Derby and becoming the only side to defeat the table-toppers in the tournament.
