Mohammad Shahzad, Afghanistan’s explosive opener and wicketkeeper, is creating headlines all over again with his exploits in the BPL. Shahzad, popularly known as the ‘Afghani Dhoni’ for his unorthodox six-hitting ability, currently sits at eight position in the highest run getter’s list with 283 runs in 11 matches after having marked his BPL debut with a blistering unbeaten 80, which helped Rangpur Riders thrash Chittagong Vikings by nine wickets at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
The power-hitter bears a great resemblance to his cricketing idol MS Dhoni. Apart from the identical helicopter shots and massive hits to the fence the 228-year-oldportly batsman has shown immense ability to finish off chases for hi team.
He has been under the spotlight for quite a long time having established himself as a prominent batsman in the Afghanistan cricket team. Shahzad also has the most number of T20I Player of the match awards (9) by an associate member. He is also the highest run-getter when it comes to associate nation and is currently the only cricketer from the associate nation to be sitting in the top ten of the ICC T20I batsmen rankings.
He played a prominent role in Afghanistan’s qualification to the World T20 last year and then guided them to the ODI and T20 series wins over Zimbabwe in December-January. In January, he smacked 118 not out off just 67 balls — the fourth highest individual score in T20Is — in Sharjah as Afghanistan registered their sixth consecutive T20Is win over Zimbabwe.
He is unorthodox but not like AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell who hit fancy shots to entertain the fans. His approach is straight and simple. He doesn’t mind if the ball is meet the middle of the bat of flies off the edge. All he cares his getting runs, at a fast pace, regardless of what.
