Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2019 witnessed four enthralling encounters on Wednesday. All four matches witnessed a few individual performances, who stole the limelight either with the bat or the ball. The first match was played between Brisbane Heat Women and Melbourne Renegades Women, where the former registered a victory by a slim margin.

Brisbane Heat were able to post 153 runs on the scoreboard. Jess Jonassen emerged as the stand-out player for her side by scoring 63 runs off just 29 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes. Her quick-fire knock also earned her ‘Player of the Match’ award. In reply, Melbourne Renegades started off strong with Danni Wyatt’s 18-ball 42.

However, they were unsuccessful to stitch partnerships to propel them to the target of 154. Eventually, the side could only gather 147 runs on the board, falling short of the target by seven runs. Georgia Wareham was the pick of the bowlers for Melbourne as she scalped two wickets while conceding 27 runs in her spell.

The second encounter was between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers. After losing the toss and put out to bat first, Melbourne Stars posted a formidable total of 149 runs on the board. Skipper Elyse Villani led the side from the front and played a brilliant knock of 59 runs off 56 balls. She was assisted by the quick-fire cameo of 38 runs off 22 balls by Mignon du Preez.

Perth Scorchers did not encounter much trouble in chasing down the target of 150 as they reached the score with 5 balls remaining. Amy Jones and skipper Meg Lanning propelled their side to a fantastic start. The duo stitched an opening partnership of 147 runs to make things easy for Perth. Melbourne Stars’ bowlers were unsuccessful to provide vital breakthroughs for their side.

Strikers beat Thunder in a low-scoring clash in WBBL 2019

The third match was a low-scoring clash between Sydney Thunder Women and Adelaide Strikers Women. After winning the toss, Sydney elected to bat first but could only post 112 runs on the board at the loss of four wickets. No batswoman was able to accelerate in her innings. Skipper Rachael Haynes was the top-scorer for her side as she amassed 33 runs in 27 balls.

With a score that was not challenging enough, restricting Adelaide was certainly going to be an uphill task for Sydney Thunder Women. Despite Nida Dar’s excellent spell, Sydney bowed down to Sophie Devine’s brilliant’s knock of 63 runs off 58 balls. Devine remained unbeaten as Adelaide chased down the target with six wickets in hand.

The final clash of the day was between Sydney Sixers Women and Hobart Hurricanes Women. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Sydney gathered 134 runs on the board with the loss of seven wickets. Carrying her excellent form, Marizanne Kapp showed her brilliance by scoring 55 runs off 40 balls. Belinda Vakarewa, who scalped four wickets and conceded only 19 runs, played a vital role in dismantling Sydney’s top-order.

Hobart Hurricanes’ run-chase was dented by the early breakthroughs by Kapp. She picked up three wickets while conceding 23 runs. However, Nicola Carey stuck in the middle to ensure the victory for her side. Carey amassed 55 runs in 46 balls including 6 fours. Hurricanes chased down the target with 10 balls remaining.
