Indian cricket is currently going through a dark phase due to the captaincy saga. The fight is against one of the best players in world cricket, Virat Kohli, and the richest cricket board, BCCI. People see this as a battle between Kohli and Sourav Ganguly, BCCI’s president.

Kohli and Ganguly have given two contradictory statements over several things in the past couple of days. The entire story started after Kohli announced his decision to step down as the T20I captain of the Indian team. Ganguly mentioned that he requested Kohli not to quit the captaincy. However, in a press conference on Wednesday, Kohli refused any such request made by the BCCI supremo.

The drama continued when BCCI announced the Indian team for the ODIs in South Africa and made Rohit Sharma the team’s captain. BCCI’s decision was quite the opposite of what Kohli said during an interaction with the media. He mentioned that he expressed his desire to remain the Test and ODI squad captain. However, the selectors wanted a common captain for the limited-overs format and preferred Rohit.

During the press conference, Kohli claimed that the BCCI well-received his decision to step down from the captaincy position. He further mentioned that BCCI progressively took his decision and had no issue with him not leading the T20I side.

I was contacted 1.5 hours before the selection committee meeting: Virat Kohli

“When I approached BCCI about the T20 captaincy, it was received well by them and I was not told to not leave the T20 captaincy. I was contacted 1.5 hours before the selection committee meet. The chief selector discussed the Test team. Before ending the call the selectors told me I won’t be ODI captain and I was fine. There was no prior communication,” Kohli said during the press conference before the Indian team took their flight for South Africa.

Ganguly and Kohli have narrated two different stories, leaving the Indian fans confused. Some of them have taken Ganguly’s side and started a trend on Twitter with #NationStandsWithDada. In reply, Kohli’s fan made the #WorldStandsWithKohli trend on the number one position on the social media platform.
