The defending champions Australia began their World Cup campaign in style with a grand 8-wicket win over the West Indies, the runners-up of the previous edition. West Indies batted first after winning the toss, which turned out to be a controversial one with their captain Stafanie Taylor originally saying that they would bat first but soon said that they want to field. However, the match referee who was present there asked her to stick with the call she made first.

The West Indies Women were bowled out for 204 in the 48th over as none of their batters went on to score big despite getting starts. Australia Women chased down the target quite easily as the opening pair Nicole Bolton and Beth Mooney put on a 171-run stand.
