Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes that the youngsters should get their fair share of opportunities in the Indian cricket team if there are plans of dropping the seniors.

Questions rose about the place of some of the seniors in the team during One Day Internationals against the West Indies. Yuvraj Singh’s dismal performance with the bat in the Caribbean has given us serious hints that it’s nearly time for the batsman to pave way for the youngsters. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 54 run-knock consuming 114 deliveries in the 4th ODI was highly criticised by some. Many believe that Dhoni who has always been known for his aggressive approach towards the game is falling victim to age.

Ganguly came in support of young wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant and stated that the fresher deserved a chance in the final ODI.

Where are the youngsters getting a chance? I feel in the fifth ODI we should have played Rishabh Pant. If we do not give these players a chance then how will they get international exposure?

“First, let them get enough experience. Then we can think of phasing out the seniors,” the CAB president, who turned 45 on Saturday, said.

On the MCC meeting:

Ganguly was in London for the MCC world Cricket Committee meeting on the 3rd and 4th July. Speaking about the same Ganguly revealed the topics that were taken up in the meeting.

“A lot of things were discussed. From the suggestion of a rethink of distribution model in international cricket, protecting and sustaining the future of Test cricket, strong support for the inclusion of cricket in the Olympic Games to the support for the ICC Cricket committee’s changes to DRS…” he said.

“A World Test League has also been suggested with a championship final. This could start from 2019. All the members agreed that Test cricket has to survive. Cricket cannot do without a Test match.

“Test cricket is still the greatest challenge in the sport. It is the ultimate stage and mentally, the toughest format of the game to excel in,” he added.

On the head coach selection:

Ganguly also pointed out that everything about the new head coach will be crystal career on 10th July. “There will be absolute transparency. Like it was when Anil Kumble was chosen last year.” he said.

When asked about the wishes he received on his birthday he pointed out that his daughter’s message touched him the most. “Sana’s message was very touching. The chief minister’s message also was very nice. I am touched. It feels nice.”
